Digital images of Angkor from 1954

I recently found out about a small but  lovely collection of images of Angkor taken by Miss Margaret Parx Hays in 1954 while she was on vacation from her job in the Consul of the American State Department in Manila. The collection is part of the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections Center.

The Terrace of the Leper King- with the original statue in situ!

Pre Rub temple with French Legionnaires in the background.

In the UWDCC website they note that:

Being one of the thousands of daily visitors to Angkor today it would be hard to imagine that on their first day there, Miss Hays and her two French Diplomat friends drove freely from one temple to another as the only tourists at the complex.

The famous Hotel d’Angkor.

A few lovely street scenes are included too.

Check out the rest of the photos here.
